Interested in a career in mammography?

Interested in a career change? If you have an undergraduate degree in a health or science-related field, you may be eligible to apply for the Graduate Diploma of Mammography at Charles Sturt University, supported by BreastScreen SA. There are two places available in South Australia for the next intake in January 2026.

This course spans 42 weeks, commencing with a one-week, face-to-face intensive component held at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, NSW. The remaining coursework is delivered either online or in person at BreastScreen SA clinics. You can view the course brochure here.

The practical component of the course involves performing mammograms under the supervision of highly experienced BreastScreen SA staff, who will guide you through each step until you are able to carry out mammograms independently.

Upon successful completion of the Graduate Diploma of Mammography, you will be eligible to apply for internally advertised mammography roles within BreastScreen SA. This provides a valuable pathway to transition into clinical practice, where you can contribute directly to life-saving breast cancer screening services across South Australia.

When do applications close?

Applications are expected to close in December 2025.

When does the course commence and finish?

The course commences 2 February 2026 and runs until 26 February 2027.

Is it a full-time course?

Students must complete the course at 0.5 Full-Time Equivalent (0.5 FTE) (e.g. 2.5 days a week).

How many places are there?

Two places will be offered to postgraduates in South Australia.

What are the undergraduate prerequisites for the course?

The undergraduate prerequisite for the course is a degree in a health or science-related field.

Is there a practical component and is it paid?

There is a practical component to the course. As part of the course, you’ll undertake a 0.5 full-time equivalent (FTE) medical imaging clinical placement each week for 41 weeks with BreastScreen SA (unremunerated).

Is there any travel required?

There will be an initial 1-week intensive course component in Wagga Wagga, NSW (2 February 2026 - 6 February 2026). The remainder of the course will be online or in-person in South Australia.

On-campus accommodation may be available to you for the intensive course week in NSW.

Is the travel cost covered?

The cost of the travel is not covered as part of the course fees. However, BreastScreen SA is exploring options to contribute towards travel and accommodation expenses.

How much does it cost to complete the course?

Do I need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to complete this course?

Yes, to enrol in the Graduate Diploma of Mammography at Charles Sturt University, you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

As the course is not CRICOS registered, international students are not eligible to apply.
